WoodWelding®, the future of fixation.

Discover our innovative fixation technique for a wide array of materials: wood, composites, lightweight panels...

How does this ultrasound based technology work ?

This technology involves a sonotrode and a thermoplastic pin. The ultrasounds generated by the sonotrode will allow the pin to root itself into the material of choice in less than 5 seconds.
Step 1
Starting point of the fixation process.
Step 2
An ultrasonic sonotrode device drives the thermoplastic element into the material.
Step 3
Shearing forces at the polymer surface cause it to liquefy and penetrate into surrounding cavities
Step 4
The polymer rapidly cools, resulting in a stable bond after only a few seconds.

Our Advantages

WoodWelding® technology has many advantages when compared to traditional connection solutions
Fast
The WoodWelding® process is much faster than alternative fixation techniques, allowing more efficient in-line processing and eliminating the end of line curing time. The total time required is between 1 to 5 seconds.
Strong Attachment
High strength fixation and tolerance compensating due to integration of polymer into the substrate.
Freedom of Design
Enables the development of new product concepts, i.e. hollow core boards without wooden frames.
Clean and Efficient
Eliminates the use of messy adhesives.
Enhanced Control Mechanism
Statistical control over the entire process, providing certainty on the quality of each fixation.
Intellectual Property Protection
The company owns an extensive and global portfolio of more than 70 patents surrounding the ability of a polymeric fastening element to be ultrasonically liquefied and positively connected to a porous substrate material.

Frequency questions

What is ultrasonic welding ?
Ultrasonic welding is a joining technique that uses high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations to create a solid-state bond between materials, typically plastics or other porous materials. The process involves applying a rapid oscillating motion at the point of contact between two parts, under pressure, to produce a seamless bond without the need for external adhesives, screws, or heat. The friction generated by the ultrasonic vibrations produces localized heat, causing the materials to soften and fuse together. This method is favored for its speed, energy efficiency, and ability to join materials without compromising their intrinsic properties.
How does ultrasonic welding differ from traditional fixation methods ?
WW technologies enable secure fastening in lightweight materials, even under extreme conditions, all within a minimal timeframe. Additionally, it offers unparalleled design flexibility and ensures a clean process. Say goodbye to screws or other messy adhesives.
What materials can be joined using ultrasonic welding ?
The process works on a variety of porous materials. The only requirements are that the substrate has a porous surface and can withstand a certain degree of pressure. Our pins are usually made of thermoplastic except for our Biowelding technology which uses bio-based or biodegradable materials.
How long does the ultrasonic welding process take ?
The total time required is between 1 to 5 seconds.
Are there any limitations or challenges associated with ultrasonic welding ?
Yes and it always depend on the specific use case.
In our non-medical fields, while ultrasonic welding offers numerous advantages, it is particularly optimized for automated industrial production and high-volume manufacturing. This is because there's an initial investment required for ultrasonic machines. Therefore, for smaller production volumes or manual operations, the upfront cost might be a consideration. However, in scenarios with large-scale production, the efficiency and speed of the process often justify the initial investment, leading to long-term benefits and cost savings.
